Five persons who sustained injuries in the Sunday explosion in Kaduna metropolis have died, bringing the death toll to about 25.
But the Kaduna State Police Command which confirmed the death of the five people yesterday maintained that only 11 people loast their lives in the blast while the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said yesterday that only nine people were confirmed dead in the blast.
At least 20 commercial motorcycle riders popularly known as Achaba were reportedly killed when a bomb-laden car exploded on Sunday near a local breakfast joint as it was being chased by the police along Ahmadu Bello Way, by Sardauna Crescent.
Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Muhammad Jinjiri Abubakar, confirmed the death, saying it is only the police who have the authority to declare the number of casualties in issues that have to do with internal security.
“We are surprised by the number of casualties reported by some papers. Your paper was even fair in its reports but for other papers, if I take them to court would they be able to show me the number of dead bodies they reported?
“As I said yesterday (Sunday), we were able to identify six dead bodies but as at this afternoon (yesterday) I would like to confirm that additional five people have lost their lives, bringing the total to 11,” Abubakar said.
On the issue of whether the police were able to make any arrest or have gotten a clue as regarding those behind the explosion, he said:“We are making progress on the issue of our investigation. I don’t want to pre-empt our investigation as that may hinder our efforts.”
NEMA spokesman, Yusha’u Shuaibu, also yesterday confirmed the death of nine people, saying 38 were injured.
He said the agency came about the figures after investigation, saying some who were presumed to have died were alive and recovering from various injuries.
