Syria: Russia Set To Back UN Moves, If Conditions Are Met

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Russia says it is ready to support a United Nations Security Council statement on Syria, provided certain conditions are met.
Moscow and Beijing have twice vetoed resolutions that condemned Syria’s yearlong assault on rebels.
But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has now signalled support for a Western-drafted statement deploring the turmoil and backing peace efforts by Kofi Annan. He stressed however that there must be no ultimatums and that Annan, the UN-Arab League envoy, should release full details of his plan to end the bloodshed.
The text, which falls short of a formal resolution, could be adopted swiftly.
Visiting Indonesia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the situation in Syria was “unacceptable”.
He set out the UN’s priorities as stopping violence on all sides, engaging in inclusive political dialogue and establishing urgent humanitarian access.
