N44m Bribe Claim: Panel Chair Steps Down Today

Chairman of the House Committee on Capital Market and Other Institutions, Herman Hembe

The House of Representatives may sack Herman Hembe and members of his committee who are conducting a public hearing on the Capital Market.
The house was unsettled at last Thursday’s accusations of the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC), Aruma Oteh against the chairman of the committee Herman Hembe.
Oteh said that the chairman of the committee demanded a bribe of N44 million from the commission and had before then collected money from SEC to attend a capital market conference, but could not give account of what happened to the money.
The leadership of the house of representatives who are considering placing a partial embargo on public hearings, queried Hembe on friday. Hembe has denied the charges brought against him by Oteh.
While some members of the house of representatives want the chairman removed and investigated, others want the Ethics and Privileges Committee to look into the matter, as the public hearings continue. Imam Imam, the Speaker’s Special Adviser on media, said that Tambuwal’s position will be clear on Tuesday during the plenary, but refused to give details.
