Large explosion in north Nigeria’s main city amid sect attacks

An explosion ripped through a zonal police headquarters Friday in the largest city in Nigeria’s Muslim north, causing unknown casualties, witnesses said.
The blast occurred just after 5 p.m. in the city of Kano, the second largest city in Nigeria. Police kept Associated Press reporters away from the building, which had its roof removed and blown out in the explosion.
Authorities could not be immediately reached for comment to say what caused the blast or say if there had been any injuries. An AP reporter could see a plume of smoke also rising from another neighborhood in the city.
Another AP reporter said the explosion was powerful enough to shake his car several miles (kilometers) away.
