Madonna has spoken out against Lady Gaga in the past, and it looks like the ageing Queen of Pop isn’t done yet either as, ahead of her performance at the Super Bowl Half-Time Show and the forthcoming release this year of her 12th studio album, she has started up the promotional campaign.
The 53 year-old had offered compliments of a sort to Gaga on The Graham Norton Show in the UK recently, with Mtv News reporting her saying “When I first saw her I was really impressed by her, she was cool. She did remind me of me back in the day.” It’s the last sentence you need to focus on in that, because that compliment has been rather undermined by the fact she suggested again that Gaga had plagiarised her. Madge said with no little acidity “I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well-done. When I heard [‘Born This Way’] on the radio … I said, ‘that sounds very familiar’ … It felt reductive.” When asked if “reductive” was a good or a bad thing she replied “look it up.”
Madonna had more words on ‘Born This Way’ for Newsweek, suggesting that Gaga copied her track ‘Express Yourself’; “I thought, ‘What a wonderful way to redo my song’. I mean, I recognised thechord changes. I thought it was. interesting.” Damned with faint praise indeed.
